The Freeport Community Library is seeking a Technical Services Librarian to manage the professional cataloging, classification, and physical processing of library materials, while also providing direct public service at the lending services desk. Working under the general supervision of the Deputy Library Director, this position combines behind-the-scenes technical services work with hands-on customer service, circulation support, and basic technology assistance for library patrons.
This is a 38-hour/week, full-benefits position. The work schedule will include one evening per week and seasonal Saturdays. The pay range for this position is $24.29 – $28.82/hour, representing Steps 1 through 5 of the pay scale.
What you’ll do
Staff the lending services desk and provide customer service to Library patrons of all ages
Assist with interlibrary loan requests and process incoming and outgoing ILL deliveries
Answer reference and informational questions, provide Reader’s Advisory services, help patrons use public technology such as copiers, printers, Wi-Fi, and computers
Catalog and classify materials according to Minerva consortium standards and industry standards, including MARC, Resource Description and Access (RDA), Library of Congress Subject Headings, and Dewey Decimal classification
Perform collection maintenance tasks, including inventory and weeding
Process physical items for circulation (labeling, barcoding, covers, etc.)
What we’re looking for
Strong customer service skills and the ability to work well with patrons of all ages and abilities
Knowledge of public library principles, current library technologies, and reader interests, including familiarity with books and authors across interest levels
A strong technology background, with proficiency in Microsoft Office programs, databases, and the internet; familiarity with Sierra ILS and the Minerva consortium is a plus
Ability to keep and maintain accurate library records and statistics
Sound independent judgment and the ability to make decisions in line with library policy
Exceptional customer service skills
A friendly, helpful demeanor and the ability to handle detailed work amid frequent interruptions
Comfort and enthusiasm working in a lively, energetic environment
Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent required, with a Master’s degree in Library Science or related field from an accredited college or university preferred. Any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered
Two to five years of technical services library experience preferred
Ability to accurately classify and catalog library materials, and to analyze and utilize a variety of library reports and records
